"Somerville and
Ross" was the joint pen name of two Irish women, Edith Œenone
Somerville, and her cousin Violet Martin. They were the authors of many popular
books in the early part of the 20th Century. These included the four
books of the Irish RM series; The Real Charlotte; Through Connemara in a Governess Cart; and many other novels and
travel books. The Irish RM series was
particularly popular, and remains so to this day. There were three books of
short stories: Some Experiences of an
Irish R.M. (1899); Further Experiences of an Irish R.M.
(1908) and In Mr Knox's Country
(1915). These are in print and also freely available online. In addition there
is Slipper's ABC of Fox-Hunting
(1903), rare and long out of print, which we have here. Edith Somerville
trained as an artist before taking to writing, and this is an album of twenty
fox-hunting scenes painted by her, with verse commentary by Slipper.
